In praise of cozy games with no timers

September 24, 2026 · Markus Vogel

There's a quiet revolution in cozy mobile games, and it's about removing the things that made them stressful. Energy bars, build timers, daily login streaks. The games we keep coming back to, like Meadow Keepers, threw all of that out.

When there's no timer telling you to wait four hours, the game becomes something you control instead of something that controls you. You play when you want, for as long as you want, and stop without losing progress or feeling nagged.

This changes how the game feels on a fundamental level. A farm sim with no energy limit is about the activity itself, planting, tending, building, rather than about managing an artificial resource meant to slow you down.

It also makes these games perfect end-of-day material. No pressure, no FOMO, just a small world you can poke at for ten minutes before bed. More developers should trust that the loop itself is enough.
